Former Senate Majority Leader, Ali Ndume, has criticised the Nigerian Senate over the rejection of Mr Ibrahim Magu as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Father, son die inside well in Sokoto


A middle-aged man, Malam Umar, and his teenage son, Abubakar, died inside a well they were digging at Gidan-Filani village in Sokoto State.


The incident was said to have happened on Wednesday.

An eye-witness said on Thursday that the duo had dug up to nine feet when the side of the well suddenly collapsed on Abubakar, who was inside.

Nigerian army detains six soldiers for allegedly brutalising woman


A fresh case of soldiers’ brutality against a female Nigerian citizen is being investigated, the Nigerian army has said.

Six soldiers, the army said, are currently in detention over the incident.

This is the third time such incident would be occurring within a month.

The victim whose name was given as Ruth Orji was said to have been beaten on Sunday by soldiers from 174 Battalion, Ikorodu, Lagos State, for daring to challenge a soldier who reportedly slapped her brother.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has filed an appeal and a motion to stay execution of a judgement on Sprite and Fanta soft drinks.


An Igbosere High Court had ordered the Agency to compel the Nigerian Bottling Company, NBC, Plc, to carry a mandatory warning on its Fanta and Sprite products, stating that the contents should not be taken with Vitamin C in order to avoid poisoning.

Six Unilag students charged with gang-rape, get N6m bail


Six students of the University of Lagos (Unilag), who allegedly gang-raped a 17-year-old female colleague, were on Wednesday granted reprieve by a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.


They were released on a N6 million bail.

The accused are — Simeon Omowole, 18; Randy Chukka, 17; Samuel Oyefara, 18; Peter Adeboyega, 17; Chuka Chukwu, 19; and Peace Nwakanma, 18 (a female) — pleaded not guilty to a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, rape and sexual harassment.

Boko Haram attacking soft targets to remain relevant – Army


The Nigerian Army has said the recent suicide attacks by Boko Haram fighters on soft targets in Borno State are indications that the insurgents have lost focus and are determined to remain relevant at all costs.

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Wednesday, refused to confirm Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
President Muhammadu Buhari had late last year submitted the name of Mr. Magu to the Senate, for confirmation as substantive Chairman of EFCC, having served in acting capacity since November, 2015.
